7/26     Administrative meeting: If you cannot be there, make other arrangements to get course materials, e.g. have another student pick them up.
             Introduction to the course.
             Pick up books and other course materials.
             Last chance to register for our CPR/FPR course on 8/12  (MUST have check for fee).

8/2       Reading: Chapters 1-4
           Topics: Vital systems: respiratory, circulatory, nervous. PDT. Effects of heat, cold, altitude.
           Practice: PDT (BSI). Vital signs. Recognizing signs of respiratory distress/illness.

8/7        Reading: Chapter 5
           Topics: Other vital systems. Anatomy.
           Practice: Anatomy games. Patient assessment (teams of 3, student/coach with skill sheets).

8/9       Reading: Chapters 7-8
           Topics: Shock. Bleeding control. Bandaging.
           Practice: Bandaging. Patient assessment (teams of 3).

8/11     Reading: Appendix B & Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer textbook
           Saturday 9 to 5: CPR/FPR (Red Cross).  Extra fee for those doing it with us. See CPR.

8/14     Reading: Review Chapter 8
           Topics: The skin. Wounds & wound care. Moulage lesson.
           Practice: Bandaging (cravat & gauze roller). Assessment/bandaging problems (teams of 2)

8/16     Reading: Chapters 6, 9, 12
           Topics: Oxygen administration & airways. Bone injuries.
           Practice: Oxygen & airways. Fixation splinting of leg & ankle. Scenarios (airway/respiratory problems, wounds & fractures).

8/18    Skills clinic: Traction splinting & review of fixation splinting (AM); Scenarios (PM).
           Saturday 9 to 5

8/21     Reading: Chapters 10, 11
           Topics: Joint injuries. Mechanisms & patterns of injury.
           Practice: Splinting arm (fractures & dislocations). Scenarios (bone & joint injuries, oxygen may be needed)

8/23    Reading: Chapter 13
           Topics: Head, eye, face, neck(soft tissue) injuries.
           Practice: Scenarios featuring headers/altered LOR, fractures.

8/25    Skills clinic (AM): Stations for assessment, bandaging, splinting. Scenarios (PM): Volunteer victims in full moulage.
           Saturday 9 to 5.

8/28    Reading: Chapters 15, 16
           Topics: Chest & abdominal injuries.
           Practice: Anatomy game. Scenarios featuring chest/abd. injury.

8/30    Reading: Chapter 14
           Topics: Neck & back injuries.
           Practice: Straightening the pretzel. Logrolling. Scenarios including possible spinal injuries.

8/31    Reading: Chapter 19
           Topics: Hypothermia & frostbite
           Practice: Scenarios including cold injury, awkward patient positions.

9/4      Reading: Chapter 23
           Topics: Heat illness, altitude illness.
           Practice: Scenarios featuring high altitude mountain bike race [Bring mountain bikes & helmets as props].

9/6     Reading: Chapter 18
          Topics: Medical emergencies: Diabetes, seizures, stroke, drug abuse. Psychological problems.
           Practice: Scenarios featuring medical problems that caused accidents/injuries.

9/8     Reading: Review Chapter 14
          Saturday 9 to 5: Backboarding clinic.

9/11   Reading: Chapter 17, 25
          Topics: Gastro-intestinal disease. Water disinfection. Poisoning.
          Practice: Scenarios featuring medical problems and injuries.

9/13   Reading: Chapter 20, 28
          Topics: Care of infants & children. Emergency childbirth.
          Practice: Scenarios with children as victims.

9/15   Reading: Chapter 21, 22, 24, 27
          Outdoor scenario day at Tilden Park
          Topics: Extrication & transfer. Water rescue. Triage.
          Practice: Extrications, carries, simulated water rescues, scenarios on slopes.

9/18  Reading: Chapter 26
         Topics: Biological hazards (snakes, bugs, mammals).
         Practice: Scenarios including possible anaphylaxis, tick paralysis, etc.

9/20  Final written exam

9/22  Final practical exam: Graded scenarios
         Saturday 9 to 5
